Naughty Books And Dirty Looks

I was talking to you the other day about reading autobiographies and that the last two I had read were a little heavy going. The first was My Booky Wook by Russell Brand, despite having a dark subject matter he managed to inject a little humour which at times did not quite sit well with me. Overall it was a good read but sad in parts.

The other I read and finished quite recently was, Spilling The Beans by Clarissa Dickson-Wright. This book was a very good read, spoilt slightly by the name dropping which I’m sure was unintentionally annoying. Clarissa is a well connected woman from an equally well heeled family, her father being a surgeon to the queen.

I found the attention to detail regarding lineage and events a little tiring from time to time but she is a very interesting woman who has been through far more than is portrayed in her television appearances. I won’t tell you anymore for fear of spoiling the book for you if you do intend to buy it, it is a good read just bear the points I made here in mind.

So, today whilst we were in the mall I decided to go for another autobiography but with a totally different tone. I spotted Susan Winemaker’s book Concertina the Life And Loves Of A Dominatrix. From the extract on the cover it looks like it is going to be an interesting read with hints towards a happy ending.

It didn’t occur to me until I handed the book over to the shop assistant at the other side of the counter in Blackwell, that the subject matter was not exactly vanilla. I thought I saw the girl give me an enquiring look as she took my money from me. It was probably just me being silly.

But this did make me think that I was slightly embarrassed purchasing such a book in a family book store.

Strange I can walk in to an adult store without a problem. Pick up sex toys from displays and try them out. Even give advice to shoppers regarding their purchases but the act of buying a slightly naughty book in a bookshop made me a little self-conscious.

I suppose it all comes down to the right environment. Had I bought that book at the adult store I wouldn’t have thought twice about handing it over to the girl behind the cashdesk.

Good job it wasn’t the Kama Sutra. Lol
