Elemental

EmpedoclesTo the elements it came from
Everything will return.
Our bodies to earth,
Our blood to water,
Heat to fire,
Breath to air.
“Empedocles”, Matthew Arnold, 1852

I have a strange affinity with fire. You can draw your own conclusions regarding what that says about my psychology. I have been told I have a fiery personality. OK I have a temper on me, but that’s not what I’m talking about, and I’m certainly not going to throw myself into Mount Etna like Empedocles.

However, there is something about a fire that draws and captivates me. No wonder the ancients had it as one of their four element. Now I’m not a big new-ager so someone can probably fill me in on what it says about me in that respect too.

I can lose myself in the glowing heart of a conflagration, drift through the incandescent plasma of a flame. I find it quite spiritual. Is that the right word? Anyway. I’m going to try an experiment here. If you were an element Earth, Air, Fire or Water, what would you be and why?

I know the Zodiacal signs have one of the four elements associated with each of them but disregard that. What do you feel you are? And what sort of lover does that make you?

Perhaps just as importantly what sort of lover do you attract/repel? As Empedocles would have termed it, the Philia (Love, φιλíα) and the Neikos (Strife, sorry I’m not sure of the spelling of this one 🙁 νεικος ?) of your relationships.

  1. I used to love the smell of a camp fire until I set my back verandah on fire last year! I do get mesmerised looking into the flames though; and when it’s contained-I love nothing more than sitting around a fire at night.

As a virgo I’m in the Earth category- which I tend to agree with; I’ve been a nudist for the last fifteen years and love nothing more than getting my kit off in the great outdoors. As a Earth ‘lover’ I need to feel a deep connection with the other person before I can really let myself ‘go’ so to speak- in fact, my Hubby’s the only person I’ve ever orgasmed in front of, even though I have had about 20 other sexual partners over the years. I can’t relax enough to show that side of myself to just anyone.

Hubby’s a Pisces- and so then a Water sign; very still, deep troubled waters. I guess I must ground him. I don’t think I’ve ever had a relationship with a Fire sign. For me at least- Fire and Earth don’t mix!

  2. Oooh, this is a toughie! Well, I’m an Aries – fire sign – and I AM a typical Aries in all respects. Like you, I am drawn to the flames, but putting that aside..
I tend to see beauty in all things, and get excited about all things. Am I allowed to have an element of all of them in me? Is that allowed? If I had to choose, I’d want to be Earth. I feel I have a strong relationship (for want of a better word) with Mother Earth and all things natural. Maybe that’s why I find Virgo’s attractive, after all, I’m married to one! I’d like to be given the chance to prove rn_buffoon wrong! Lol!

  3. Ah, I think water. I’m not even sure what my zodiac element is (Scorpio) but I’m moveable, will get into every part of a lover–his mind & heart as well as his body. I can be unpredictable. I can be icy. I’m not saying this as well as I thought I might have. I hope I’m making sense.

  4. I am a sea goat……Capricorn…… about 60% of that stuff seems to be at least somewhat applicable to me, but….it could also apply to countless others who are NOT Capricorns, soo….??

    I think I am a water sign….I think……but…..well…. it must be true…….darn it…I have to pee……

  5. Air. And I am sooo already regretting saying that in front of DZER. LOL! I can see many jokes in my future.

I am drawn to breezes light or strong. For no other reason than, it just feels good.

  6. Although my zodiac element is air, I find myself strongly drawn to fire and water. I can watch the flames of a fire for hours on end, the dance of light and shadow, along with the heat from the fire entice me into a hypnotic state at times. My surroundings are built of water, lots of fountains and ponds, inside and out. I think I love in the same way, Hot and passionate at times, smooth, liquid and flowing at others.. Strange coming from a Libra?? Maybe they balance.. now that I think of it. I do burn lots if incense and oils, therein might be the Air element.
Hell, Maybe I’m an elemental al la carte!

  7. I am a water sign, through and through. Nothing relaxes me like water does, whether it be the ocean, a bath, or even a thunderstorm.

Attracted to? Not sure on this one, I’ve dated all kinds! lol

  8. I am fire, hot and untamed. Hardin is earth; he is my base, my support. I heat his world, and he holds mine.

And I am impressed that you learned Greek!

  9. I often think of myself as fire, but one of those weird fires that burns inward on itself – deep and a mixture of reds, oranges and yellows. Like the kind of fire in a fireplace with burning wood and coal.

I think the missus would definitely be earth. Supportive, buturing, caring and with strong beliefs.

  10. I am an earth sign by birth.. But I like fire…. oh boy do I like fire… In a partner though… I would have to say air.. because I do prefer women who breath….

  11. Both terms are correct, one for English readers, the other for Greek 🙂

At a young age I had this fascination with fire, but always had disasterous situations relating to it (I knocked over a gas heater and put the carpet on fire at the age of 4, at five while playing with a lit candle and putting the flame against a window just to see whether anything would happen, put the curtains on fire…in my adult years, while experimenting jobwise and working in restaurant kitchens i’ve had really painful seconds with gas flames and salamanders)..it’s true…and weird as well.

I’d consider myself water, for a variety of reasons that are outside of the zodiac definition.

Its’ difficult to determine what element I attract.

  12. I feel most drawn to water. I like to swim, and the sound of the ocean soothes me. Doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy playing with fire once in a while :).

  13. does it mean anything that most of the significant partners of my life either had the same name and/or were aquariuses?
    ok zodiac aside:
i agree with miss understood, i cant exclude any, each elelment has its own calling and bite . Does that make us indecisive or dyanamic?
