Sexsomnia, Sleep Fucking

Until the other night I had never heard of this condition, yes I’ve heard of sleepwalking, night terrors and even sleep apnoea (the person stops breathing momentarily whilst sleeping) but sexsomnia was a new one to me.

The expression “Sexomnia” was first used by Dr C M Shapiro and two colleagues at the Sleep Alertness Clinic at the University of Toronto and the Toronto Western Hospital in 2003. The programme was in the form of a documentary featuring one couple in particular who were seeking help at a the sleep clinic in London to try to get to the bottom of the problem with the Shapiro team.

Here is a brief explanation of the condition

“Sexsomnia is defined in the medical dictionary as a sleeping disorder in which a person is unaware of his or her sexual acts which he or she had done while sleeping, a marked characteristic of this disease is the person shows no signs of pleasure or simply remains emotionless during the entire episode and only comes to know of his or her deeds when his or her partner, roommate or the victim tells him in the morning. While In a social dictionary it is defined as a person who is sex starved or is hungry for sex.”

At first I thought that it was one of the spoof type documentaries with very flaky science behind it, but on the contrary it is a very serious condition and led to one man being prosecuted in court for attempted rape.

The programs findings revealed should your family show a propensity towards a parasomnia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parasomnia there was an increased risk that you may develop a sleep related problem too.
