No Yoinking! - Combating Post Theft

It is a sad fact that throughout your life people will copy you. Sometimes it’s an admirer, sometimes a colleague. At best imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, at worst it’s just plain theft.

Because of the recent thefts of content from well written, well known sites we threw together a page last night that allows anyone to report a suspected theft anonymously.

Why anonymously, lots of reasons but the two primary ones are a) readers without email or Blogger Ids who could not do it any other way, and b) anyone who might feel threatened if they report a commercial porn site, or are worried about been seen as a “whistle-blower”.

When a theft is reported it will be emailed to me and recorded on a database. I along with other trusted Bloggers will review the incident, inform the victim and decide on a course of action. This problem affects us all and the only reason we set it up on our site was that we have the capability to do so. We do not feel we [Alex & Suze] are the ultimate authority when tackling this problem. It’s one that we all can and must fight together. But we are happy to host the page as a service to the blogging community.

We would be happy if we never receive another report. If the whole act of setting this facility up deters potential content thieves then it’s done its job. But the only way to ensure that is if it’s widely publicised. So if you want to help, steal this logo. LOL!

For most of us blogging is something we do for free, as a hobby and as a personal expression outlet, and for fun. Our ideas, our creativity, our souls, are all we have. The internet has, since day one, been the playground of those looking to "get away" with the realitive anonymity that the internet offers. There are hundreds of cases of this. Blogging is no different. I know for a fact that most bloggers would be honored if ASKED by someone to borrow and CREDIT the author for some reason. I've allowed certain posts of mine to be lifted when asked, and the bloggers who have done so properly credit the source. But lifting without asking is actually a crime believe it or not. Our words are our words, protected by International law. I have always been a staunch suporter of artistic rights long before I started blogging, and I will always continue to be a staunch supporter of artistic rights long after I stop blogging. (If I ever do!)

No Yoink is a great idea and I for one fully support it. Thanks guys!

Art, you're so right. 'Asking' makes a hell of a difference, it's just a courteous gesture and when there's no courtesy.

I love this idea - completely by chance today I discovered that I'm being ripped off, with a number of my posts appearing on a site elsewhere - so I'll be adding your banner to my site - and thankyou for this, I'm right behind you x

Suze, Thanks for taking the time to do this. This is very important to us bloggers. We spend a lot of time thinking about and writing our posts so that they express a bit of who we are and to have them yoinked is disrespectful at the very least.
Hopefully this can be gotten under control before it becomes a bigger problem

How do I get the logo onto my site?? (I'm slightly computer illiterate) email me when you have a chance.

Thanks ~B

My "ideas" get lifted all the time. It irks me because it will be something that is EXACTLY my style; I mean something that is blatantly the scene I wrote. And unfortunately it is done frequently by someone who blogs every single day without fail and has a huge following. (shrug) I try and think of it as the sincerest form of flattery but it really feels like "Hey, get an original thought of your own".

I'm always careful to give credit, even when it is just for an idea.

When I get a few extra minutes I will go through the Yoinking post.

Right now I have to go get in the shower and prepare to help move a frig. YAY. (Yesterday it was a canoe)

Alex - again, thankyou - a good result for me, entirely down to your efforts. If I can help in any way with other incidents like this, please let me know.

I will feel absolutely no guilt in stealing your logo!! ;) And I'll refer my own readers your way.

There's nothing we can't accomplish if we support each other. We're different minds and blogs...all with the same goal: exercising and honoring the freedom to express ourselves.
