Lesbian Persuasion
There is a lot of coverage on the BBC News regarding the Greek Island of Lesbos and the fact they want to challenge the gay movement by objecting the term “Lesbian”. Although it is the homeland of Sappho one of the most renowned female poets of antiquity, born between 630 and 612BC.
I really don’t know what all the fuss is about, especially as the televised objectors were all male! Doh!
One thing that did occur to me was where are all the good looking lesbians? The BBC had found the most masculine, tugs they could find to interview to uphold the lesbian side of the argument.
Being a bisexual who grew up with a lesbian best friend I have to ask this question because almost every time something is televised relating to lesbians they seem to find the most butch looking women out there.
And I know there are some really attractive lesbian girls, I’m not saying stunning but they do look like women. This kind of coverage almost makes me feel like they are portraying lesbians as making their sexuality choice based on lack of male attention.
What do you think?
What? Only “good looking lesbians” should be representative of the lesbian community?
Or “attractive lesbians” come to be lesbians by choice and should be on tv rather than “unattractive lesbians” who become lesbian by lack of male attention and shouldn’t?
Or, I don’t really understand what you’re trying to say here.
I had been invited to joind some friends in a lesbian club, a long time ago. There were straight people, gay males and lesbians. The lesbian couples were actually the typical masculine and feminine type. If you look at most gay male couples it’s exactly the same. I suppose there is a big difference between having a homosexual style of life and having an “open” sexuality about both genders. I am certain most of the gay/lesbian couples are just like any other straight ones who have a routine sex life, or little, if not at all anymore while being bi makes you sexually active and making you more attracted to “appealing” looking people.

The point I was making was that the portrayal of all lesbians as butch and masculine in appearance and dress is as much a misrepresentation of what it is to be a lesbian as is the portrayal of all lesbians to be beautiful, with Hollywood smiles – as they seemed to be portrayed in “The L Wordâ€.
My experience is that whether gay, straight or bi your orientation does not dictate your appearance to the extent that the media seem to want to portray it. Yes there are very effeminate gay men, but equally we are friends with one gay couple who “look†and “act†“straightâ€.
Pandering to stereotypes, positive or negative doesn’t do anything to advance the cause of gay rights or the acceptance of homosexuality in society.
I think your right, they are worried if they show good looking girls it may cause more girls to switch. Or they may offend the church.
