We just had a bit of a shock. We though that it would be handy to check out mobile Internet dongles for our laptop. Occasionally we need to access the sites out of reach of a hard connection.
We hit several problems. Because we would only use it occasionally the pay-as-you-go style options would have expired before we had used all the bandwidth. Contracts are relatively cheap but still quite minty for the amount of data transfer they offer and exceeding your bandwidth limit is astronomically expensive. Plus for most of the year we’d be paying for nothing.
There’s us thinking that mobile Internet was coming down in price.
So for the moment we are tied to hard lines. We’ll reconsider in a few months when we’re off to the exhibitions again. Unless anyone out there can recommend a UK mobile broadband service that might be suitable.
Hi guys, I have to use a mobile dongle. Vodafone do a 1GB for £15 which doesn’t expire unless you use it all up, providing you log in once every couple of months. O2 do a one day or one week validity with smaller amounts of download capability.
Vodafone and O2 both do 3GB for £15 valid for 30 days. I used the O2 one for six months and never exceeded the 3GB, even tho I was watching at least one show a week on iPlayer.
However, I have just today changed over to Vodafone because their service seems to be quicker so I can access several sites that I was unable to with O2 because it was too slow.
If you’re only going to use it occasionally, Id say the Voda 1GB for £15 deal is probably best for you. I’ve just bought one for Ruf’s new mini-laptop-thingy. So I’ll let you know how he gets on since he will probably only use it when he comes visiting 🙂
PS, You have to add about £15 for the initial dongle purchase to all of those.
